The Working Horse

Stone sculpture by Brid Ni Rinn at Roberstown, County Kildare, Ireland

Roberstown is a small village on the Grand Canal which traces its way across the Irish midlands. Once the main artery for commerce and passenger traffic, it would have seen its busiest years from 1785 until the mid 1800s when train travel became more popular.

This fine stone carving – on the wall of the Robertown Garda Station – depicts one of the barge horses, which worked along the banks of the Grand Canal, just a few feet away.
