South Portland Street Suspension Bridge - Glasgow

South Portland Street Suspension Bridge - Glasgow

Built in 1853, the South Portland Street Suspension Bridge was designed by Alexander Kirkland and built by George Martin. It replaced an earlier wooden bridge over the Clyde which had stood since 1833. The bridge suffered from early structural faults, particularly to its masonry towers, and in 1870 it underwent substantial renovation work, while in 1926 the decks and hangers were renewed.
