The Donegal Llama

The Ould Llamas' Fair

Spotted this weekend just outside Clonmany, Donegal. As you can see this is quite a young llama – in its prime. In former times in Ireland, apparently it was the older llamas that were the most prized for their meat and wool, which was soft and superior to the Irish sheep’s wool. The largest and most celebrated annual trading event used to be in County Antrim – at the Ould Llamas’ Fair in Ballycastle..O  ;-)

Why are they so endlessly fascinating? This one is a bit more interesting than most, and must have many stories to tell, though perhaps not many happy ones. It is marks the entrance to the former Richmond Penitentiary in Grangegorman, Dublin.
